The Someshwara Temple complex has a variety of sacred trees. The cannonball tree or Naga Linga tree, (Couroupita guianensis), is a native of South America. It is considered sacred because the flowers resemble the hood of a Naga, a sacred snake, protecting the Siva Linga. The peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) is considered auspicious in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism, apart from having medicinal value. Also known as Bodhi, it is this tree which Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment under. The Bilva tree (Aegle marmelos) grows in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Southeast Asia. Lord Siva is fond of this tree and every Siva temple will have it. The leaves of the tree are trifoliate representing the three eyes of shiva. This tree is also known as stone apple or bael.
