The Universe of the Someshwara Temple

The Moon God Chandra floats on a cloud on the top section of an entrance pillar. Kinnaras and Kinnaris, the half-bird half-human musicians of the heavenly realms, praise the enshrined deity with their song. Shankha Nidhi and Padma Nidhi, the dwarf guardians of Kubera’s treasure, hold the conch and the lotus respectively. They symbolize auspiciousness and prosperity. The sage Vyaghrapada is said to have asked lord Siva for a boon – to give him legs and feet more suited to scrambling over rocks and vegetation in search of flower offerings. Siva gives him the legs of a tiger (vyaghra, tiger + pada, legs).
