Materials & Construction

A wide range of materials like stone, brick and wood have gone into the construction of the Someshwara temple. Primarily, the temple is constructed with granitic stone, locally referred to as chapadi. This kind of stone is available locally and is hard and durable, making it an ideal choice. While most of the temple including from the base to the roof is constructed using stone, the hollow, pyramidical tower (vimana) that rises above the sanctum is constructed with bricks andmortar. The decorative figures on the tower are carved in stucco, which is a kind of plaster made of lime, sand and water. The gopura features a similar range of materials, having a lower half of stone and an upper half of brick, embellished with stucco figures. Timber has been used here in the form of rafters that are part of the Madras terraces.
