Post-and-lintel construction

Materials & Construction

Post-and-lintel is one of the oldest construction systems in the world. It involves two upright members supporting a flat vertical members. This system is evident in the mantapa, where stone beams are held in place by two columns spaced a distance apart. Since the beams have to bear the load that rests on them as well as their own weight, they are in the form of single stone blocks. The brackets on top of the columns also provide a good bearing for the beams and help reduce the spans. Each bay is then capped by a ceiling of stone slabs that rest on these beams.
