Adhistana

Architecture and planning

The adhisthana refers to the plinth or base of a temple, upon which the pada(walls) and other elements of the superstructure rest. The adhisthana typically consists of several mouldings (from bottom up): Upana or upatala (the base), Padma (a layer of lotus motif), Jagathi (straight and mnodestly decorated), Kumuda (round and ribbed), Kanta (neck) and Kapolapalika. (double layer of lotus petals) These layers are seen in the adhisthana of the maha mandapa of the Someshwara Temple. The adhisthana along the garbagraha varies in design with additional layers.
