Vimana

Architecture & Planning

According to Dr. SK Aruni of the Indian Council of Historical Research, the inner sanctum dates back to the Chola period, approximately a thousand years ago. The inner sanctum measuring 2.6 m by 2.4 m has a stone corbelled ceiling above. The vimana[LS2] -that rises directly above the inner sanctum is a pyramidal stepped tower, and rises roughly 6.7 m from the roof. The tower is a hollow structure of brick and lime mortar and embellished with stucco sculptures on them. After the third tala or story, the vimana takes on an octagonal form.
