The mandapa is replete with rich carvings and decorations, especially visible on its 48 pillars. These pillars can be categorized into various typologies. The standard pillar is a polygonal shaft broken up into three square blocks each of which is richly carved with sculptures of gods, animals, celestials and even ordinary people. Along the central bay, and along the periphery, a colonnette is introduced into the column. These colonettes serve the dual purpose of extending the pillar’s span and allowing for a deep overhang. Especially in the central bay, the colonnettes also keep the overall form slender, hence adding a feeling of lightness. A unique set of angular pillars occupy the spots where the mandapa extends out towards its Eastern entrance while columns abutting the entrance stairways have yalis on both sides.
