The Someshwara temple contains within it an enchanted universe of gods, celestials, hybrid animals, saints and ascetics, dancers, musicians, acrobats, animals, sacred trees, ganas and snakes. The gopura, the walls and superstructure of the temple, the open mahamandapa, the pradakshina patha and the inner navaranga mandapa pulsate with expressive sculptures in low and middle relief. The pillars of the mahamandapa alone bustle with over 500 relief sculptures. Every pillar springs a visual surprise. Most have seated lions at the base but depictions in the middle and top levels are often unpredictable – will the next sculpture be a monkey, an ascetic, a god, or a hybrid animal.
