Fabulous Animals

The Universe of the Somesvara Temple

Mythical creatures that combine the features of two or more different animals are found in all ancient cultures of the world. Numerous hybrid creatures, called ihamrga, yali, vyala, vidala, are carved on the walls and pillars of the temple. A florid makara, a goose with three heads, a creature with a lion face and the body of a bird, a human face-bird body combination, a cobra-headed bird, cow and camel headed birds, a creature that looks more like a manatee-bird than an elephant bird. These creatures add a delightful, playful sense of unpredictability to the sculptures in the temple.
