Animals mingle with gods and humans on the pillars and walls of the temple, and on its gopura and vimana. A series of highly stylised seated lions in different postures occupy the bases of most of the mandapa pillars. Caparisoned elephants raise their trunks, march and cavort – there are no wild elephants depicted in this temple. A lion mauls a human on a mandapa pillar facet. On another pillar, a hunter carries two dead hares balanced on a stick across his shoulders. There are also numerous wild monkeys depicted, seated sedately, eating fruit, others tumbling in a visual puzzle of shared heads and bodies. A stately ram adorns a pillar facet. Snakes and elephants protect and worship a linga. A rhinoceros is depicted on the dedication pillar in the interior navaranga.
