This tree, also known as Naga Linga, is native to South America and is considered sacred because the flowers resemble the hood of a Naga, a sacred snake, protecting the Shiva Linga.
Kamakshi Amman shrine
This shrine dedicated to Kamakshi Devi, one of the forms of the goddess Parvati, is likely a 17th or 18th century addition.
Vimana
This stepped tower, built of brick and lime mortar, and with figures carved out in stucco, is directly above the garbagriha or inner sanctum.
Exterior panel
Some interesting sculptures you can see on this Northern wall are of semi-divine worshippers, musicians and saints.
Adhistana
The plinth here, upon which the walls stand, is simpler and less ornate than that of the main shrine
The Girija Kalyana Frieze
This panel around the exterior of the Kamakshi Amman Shrine depicts the wedding of Shiva and Parvati.
Dwajastambha
A flag post that presides over the entry court of the Temple.
Pillar with colonnettes
A set of slender columns known as colonnettes are introduced into the pillar allowing it to support a deep overhang while adding a sense of lightness, a typical feature of Vijayanagara architecture.
Dance in the Someshwara Temple
A frieze here contains tiny, animated figures of dancers, pointing to the importance of music and dance in worship at this temple.
Doorway
The central doorway bears the sculpture of the demon-king Ravana shaking Mount Kailasha on the left, the goddess Mahishasuramardini on the right, and dwarapalakas (door guardians) on either side.
Mandapa
The mahamandapa, the main pillared hall of the temple, is open on three sides and contains 48 pillars rich with depictions of gods, celestial beings, dancers, musicians, animals and myriad episodes from Hindu mythology.
Kalyani
A step-well that would have once played an important part in the temple rituals, was only rediscovered in 2010-11, having been filled up since the early 20th century.
Ratha
An old wooden ratha, or chariot, that is used in processions around the neighboring Car Street during festivals is housed in a shed at the end of this street.
Wedding scene
The wedding ceremony of Shiva and Parvati is depicted here. Himavan, the father of the bride and King of the mountains, pours sacred water over the outstretched hand of Shiva and the joint hands of the couple, finally flowing down into the mouth of Nandi.
Gopura
Monumental gateways - with a lower half of stone and a multi-storeyed upper half in brick and mortar, decorated with stucco figures – were often added to temples in this region from the 16th century onwards.
Gandaberunda
On the northern face of this pillar is a double-headed eagle, a symbol associated with the Vijayanagar kings and later, also with the Wadiyar dynasty of Mysore. It is depicted here in anthropomorphic form.
